This is a rare, high quality, unusual & very collectable Gentleman’s Office or Study Desk. Constructed in solid mahogany circa 1880 & with connections to Liverpool University, UK.
With three very deep drawers. The left hand drawer with a drop-front and a (removable) integral letter file. Drop-front stamped reg no.210478. Large storage space behind.
The center drawer with removable dividers and with a brass tag reading ‘Patent. the Ceres automatic letter & card file’. Of interest, this patent was issued around 1881 about the same period of the founding of Liverpool University. Original patent brass lock, no key.
Right hand drawer being a very deep & large file drawer. On the inner surface is a later ink reference to the University.
Raised on castors, all brassware is original to the desk. The top being fitted with a new gilt tooled black hide leather writing surface replacing the torn original. The whole desk refurbished & french polished.
